In scripture the spiritual leaders of the local congregation are called elders, shepherds, and overseers. Their general task is to watch over the spiritual needs of the congregation with an awareness of spiritual dangers that might threaten individual Christians and the congregation as a whole.
Favorite Scripture: I don't really have a favorite. But I do really appreciate Ecclesiastes 3:1 and 1 Corinthians 13:13.
Spiritual Gifts: Showing mercy, Shepherding, Service, Empathy, Singing
Interests and hobbies: Spending time with family and friends, listening to music, collecting Mt. Dew and Charlie Brown odds and ends, playing Mexican Train Dominoes and reading repair manuals.
Movies: John Wayne movies, Fiddler on the Roof, Ben Hur, The Goonies, Back to the Future Series, Hunt for Red October, Down Periscope, Charlie Brown Movies and those with a good message.
Background: I was born in a small town just south of Quincy. I became a member of the body at 16. I married a wonderful person that I'm proud to call my wife, have sweet two daughters and son-in-laws and a multi-talented son. I have been in the heating and air conditioning business for over 30 years. And in addition to my service as a Shepherd, I love to lead singing for the congregation.
Favorite Scripture: 2 Peter 3:9
Interests and hobbies: From a toddler I've played "farm." From sick loads of feeder cattle to land drainage and sculpting problems, I just love it when a plan comes together.
Movies: Carol and I enjoy old t.v. episodes of Bob Newhart and other old series from our youth.
Books: I recently enjoyed "The Goal," a novel about a new plant manager's challenges and responses to situations and perceptions on the work flows in turning around a factory slated to close.
Spiritual Background: I grew up in a religious environment, but at an early age I may have encouraged several Sunday school teachers to consider early retirement. As a father looking down on two little sleeping daughters, I had to confront religion versus the Gospel and make the toughest move of my life.
Favorite Scripture: Philippians 4:8
Spiritual Gifts: Teaching. I enjoy teaching.
Interests and Hobbies: It is great watching our children and grand children grow. The hobby I enjoy most is working in my wood shop. I can get lost in there for hours.
Movies: We go to very few movies. However, we do enjoy the Hallmark Channel on TV.
Books: Human inerest stories, fictional or not are fun to read, nothing mushy though. Scenic accounts are fun to look at. I enjoy reading what others understand from scripture readings.
Background: From an elementary student on, I wanted to be a teacher. I am forever indebted to my vocational agriculture and physics teachers who suggested I go to the University of Missouri after high school. I told them both that I couldn't afford to do so. However, the ag teacher simply told me to set the date during the summer of 1954 when he would take my brother and me to the university to enroll. Things worked out and I really appreciated their encouragement. I taught my first class of 5th and 6th graders in the fall of 1958. Of course, my wife and family have always been and continue to be the most important part of my earthly life.
